What is an injury prevention program?

Injury prevention programs are designed to help athletes to follow a healthier lifestyle to help them avoid almost all kinds of injury through discipline. An athletic trainer, physical therapist, medical doctor, and the coach may work together to develop an appropriate training menu that the athlete(s) must follow regularly. The menu often includes:

  • strict training periods and intervals
  • having adequate nutrition and sleep
  • maintaining good hydration levels
  • correct use of sports equipment/gear

Preventing injury is crucial in keeping the athletes in the game. No matter how good the athlete is, they are often not allowed to compete in formal competitions, especially when the sport involves exerting extra effort and physical activity if they are in pain or showing signs of an injury. Aside from the measures listed above, post-surgery physiotherapy may be recommended for the athletes to aid their recovery and help prevent further injuries, after all a previous injury often causes more severe and new injuries if not treated properly.
